What is amentoflavone?

SELAGINELLA  EXTRACT is a traditional medicinal plant used to treat various human diseases, including cancer, in Asia. The detailed molecular mechanism underlying the anti-cancer effects of this plant and the anti-cancer action of the combinatorial treatment of S. tamariscina and doxorubicin have not yet been investigated.

Amentoflavone was isolated from an extract of the whole plant of Selaginella tamariscina. It is a traditional herb for the therapy of chronic trachitis and exhibits some anti-tumor activity. Scientists have confirmed it's effects of antifungaland the antifungal mechanism(s), such as mitochondria-mediated apoptotic cell death. The cells that were treated with amentoflavone exhibited a series of cellular changes that were consistent with apoptosis: externalization of phosphatidylserine, DNA and nuclear fragmentation, accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hydroxyl radicals, and activation of metacaspase.
